BATTAMBANG IS COOL & TODAY IT IS COOLER THAN EVER!
The Temperature in Battambang at 1000 hours today was an unseasonably cool 21 degrees centigrade!!!!!!

FOOTBALL FEVER HITS UNIVERSITY OF BATTAMBANG
From 11th to 13th March 2011, the football pitch at the University of Battambang came alive for a football competition to select students to play in the National University Student Cup which starts in July this year. Other equally important reasons for the recent tournament included providing a sporting event so students could have some good, clean fun and build good relationships through healthy competition.
Organised by the University of Battambang, the various faculties fielded a total of six teams and they were: Management Major Team, Information Technology major team, Financial and Banking major team, Agriculture major team, Tourism major team, Law major team.
After three days of elimination rounds the Management and Information Technology teams faced off in the final. It was a taught game for both teams, late in the first half the Management Team scored the first goal. Then, in a nail biting start to the second half IT got control of the ball, driving it into the penalty are from where a superb goal was scored. Management dominated the play for the remainder of the game, scoring a further three goals. When the final whistle blew, the score was 4-1 with Management being the victors.
The Closing Ceremony was attended by the President of the University, His Excellency Dr Touch Visalsok PhD. In addressing the players and the spectators he expressed his pleasure in the role of the university in helping the players to prepare for the competition. He said that sport is an important part of UBB’s education goals and that education and sport must be go hand in hand. Sport can provide students with relief from the stress of studying and enhance their communication skills. In closing, he said he was hopeful that the tournament would be even bigger in 2012.

Eden Cafe opened a few months ago. A unique feature is that the area upstairs is air-conditioned. The coffee is good and you can find it on Rue No 1, the street that runs along the riverside, between the new bridge and the old Angkor Hotel.
Scheduled services have resumed.
The Bus Stop Bar & Guest house has reopened under new management. You will receive a friendly welcome from the new owners. Rue No 2 next to the White Rose.
Last but not least.
The former operators of Snow White Restaurant on the Left Bank have opened a new restaurant called Angkor Thom. I had a very tasty Spaghetti Carbonnara there. just down from Smokin’ Pot and opposite White Rose.

FRIDAY LUNCHTIME IN DOWNTOWN BATTAMBANG
What started out as a trip into town at lunchtime to attend to some personal business, turned out to be a very interesting afternoon.
A friend had offered to pick me up at my office around 1.00 pm but shortly beforehand, called to say his moto had a puncture. He was at a fixer, the local term for any tradesperson, a few hundred meters along from me on National Road 5 so I set off on foot to meet him. This was not because I enjoy walking in the middle of the day but I had always been curious about this particular fixer.
His workshop consists of three decrepit beach umbrellas, a compressor, and a bucket of nuts, bolts and oddments as well as a tool kit. He himself appears rather elderly and has a list of physical disabilities that if he were from a developed country, would mean that he would be firmly and comfortable resting in the social safety net. His spectacles were very thick and were held together by wire.
The puncture was fixed in quick time and for less than a dollar. As we drove away, I could not help but think that in Cambodia, there a no people with disabilities just people with different abilities.
TIP FOR TRAVELERS
A few minutes later we arrived at the ATM at ANZ Royal Bank located at the Eastern end of the Phar Nat (Central Market) on Rue No 1.
As is often the case, I met a tourist who was mild panicked by the fact that to use the line from Little Britain, Computer says no! This is not an uncommon occurrence so here is what to do. directly opposite ANZ is the Canadia Bank. Between the two you should be able to access your cash. Failing that, there is a Western Union office at the Western end of the Market on the corner of Rue No 3.
By now, we were feeling a bit thirsty so we went from the ATM down to Rue No 3 and took a left to The Smiling Sky Bookshop for a cold drink. The shop is located near the Chayya Hotel. It has an extensive collection of books, sells hot and cold drinks, souvenirs, postcards and stamps. It is well worth a look.
Next stop was the White Rose for a sandwich and then onto Peace Book Shop on the campus of the University of Battambang........and that is where I had a real treat......more to follow.
