Arriving in Battambang after a long boat or bus trip, many tourists tend to gravitate to the centre of town for food and entertainment. This area, bounded by the river on one side, the Central Market, Street 3 and the new bridge, is within easy walking distance of most of the hotels and there you will find a range of good restaurants and a few bars.
What not many people know is that just across the river, the Left Bank offers a delightful array of things to see and do.
Every evening from about 5.00 pm, you will find hundreds of locals promenading along the esplanade. Some are jogging, others taking part in aerobic dancing, others are watching young acrobats, magicians and clowns from the Circus School displaying their talents.
There is no shortage of food stalls and the boiled sweet corn makes for a healthy snack.
Speaking of food, try la Villa on the riverfront for fine dining. This beautifully restored French, Colonial mansion has both indoor and outdoor dining areas.
Head a bit further North and turn right at the King Hotel. Just along the street you will find two places worth checking out. The first is Bambu Hotel. It only opened late last year and has great atmosphere with its breezy terraces and open air bar. Bambu is home of the Russey Restaurant. Head Chef Vichet offers a tempting menu of local and international dishes and the lamb chop are a real treat. Happy Hours in the bar are from 5.00 until 7.00 in the evenings.
A few meters further on is the Rottanak Resort. Renowned for its cocktails and friendly staff, the swimming pool is available for day users.
