THANK GOODNESS IT IS FRIDAY!

It is five-thirty on Friday evening and another work week is over so I head into town with for a few drinks and some food with a friend..

Our first stop is Comfort Inn, the latest enterprise by Sith, owner of the popular restaurant, Khmer Delight. Located directly opposite the Royal Hotel, the “Ïnn” offers food, drinks and rooms. The draught beer is about the cheapest in town.

When we arrive, the outdoor area is pretty much taken up by volunteers from VSO. Some are old hands and others, more recent arrivals.

We head inside, take seats at the bar and order a couple of draught beers. At US85c, they are extremely good value. The atmosphere is relaxed, helped along by the wide selection of retro music, helpful and friendly staff as well as the light and airy feel of the place.

Eventually, we move to the divan that runs along one wall for a chat and toy with the idea of playing a few games of pool but decide to head off to get something to eat.

Our next destination is the White Rose of Lonely Planet fame. We enter the bustling the ground floor restaurant and find it as busy as ever but we are headed upstairs to the newly opened section. There we are greeted by our host, Visal and who shows us to a table on the balcony. Being up a floor makes all the difference as we savour the zephyr of a breeze.

In very quick time, two glasses of Australian wine are placed before us, demonstrating Visal’s knack for knowing what his regulars like. Our food arrives not long after and once again we did not have to order it.

We stay until late because we get talking to some friends from Battambang’s world famous circus school....but that is a story for another time.

White Rose and Comfort Inn are both open from breakfast until late and each have an extensive Western and Asian Menu. Comfort Inn has the edge on cocktails while White Rose has an excellent wine list.
